The Bone Chests

The Bone Chests delves into a significant chapter of English history, centring on the tumultuous events of the Civil War and the assault on Winchester Cathedral by Parliamentarian forces. This gripping narrative recounts the destruction of ten elaborate wooden chests, which were used to store the remains of various historical figures. The insurgents' shocking act of using these bones as projectiles against the cathedral's exquisite stained glass raises profound questions about the sanctity of history and the reverberations of conflict.

The Plot

Cat Jarman meticulously pieces together a narrative that intertwines forensic archaeology with historical inquiry. Following the attack, a dedicated group of clergy embarked on a mission to recover the scattered remains of ancient kings, bishops, and a queen. Jarman's exploration spans over a millennium, revealing the intricate tapestry of lives once lived and the stories encapsulated within the bones.
