Invention of Women

In Invention of Women, Oyeronke Oyewumi challenges the conventional narratives surrounding gender and identity in a thought-provoking exploration of the social constructs that shape our understanding of womanhood. Through a meticulous analysis of semantics and discourse, Oyewumi unveils the intricacies of gender as a category of social organisation, particularly within the context of Yoruba culture.

The Story

Rather than adhering to Western frameworks of gender, Oyewumi presents a compelling argument that highlights the importance of cultural specificity in the discourse of gender studies. The book delves into how language and cultural practices inform the identities of women, revealing the often overlooked dimensions of their lived experiences. By examining traditional Yoruba societal structures, the author exposes the limitations of a binary understanding of gender and calls for a re-examination of feminist theories.
