Sunburn

Sunburn by Chloe Michelle Howarth is a poignant exploration of self-discovery and the complexities of love set against the backdrop of a small Irish village in the early 1990s.

The Plot

Lucy, a young woman grappling with her identity, feels increasingly alienated in the conservative environment of Crossmore. The conventional path of marriage and motherhood holds no appeal for her, not even with Martin, her handsome and doting closest childhood friend. Then, one long hot summer, a spark with her school friend Susannah ignites a passion within her that she cannot ignore.

As the summer heat intensifies, so too does Lucy's infatuation with Susannah. Their bond deepens, challenging Lucy to confront her feelings in a society that may not accept her true self. The narrative captures her internal struggle as she navigates the expectations of her community while yearning for authenticity.

With the imminent conclusion of their school days, Lucy faces a pivotal decision: to remain in Crossmore, bound by tradition, or to venture beyond, seeking a life that aligns with her desires.
