Two Brothers

Two Brothers by Jonathan Wilson delves into the lives of Jack and Bobby Charlton, two brothers from the coalfield bound by blood and football, exploring the complexities of their relationship against the backdrop of a sport that defines their existence. The narrative intricately weaves the themes of rivalry, loyalty, and the pursuit of greatness, reflecting on how their differing paths are shaped by personal ambitions and external pressures.

The Plot

Jack was open, charismatic and pig-headed, a gangling central defender at Leeds who developed a profound tactical intelligence; Bobby was guarded, shy and reserved, an athletic attacking midfielder at Manchester United who survived the Munich air disaster. Together, for England, they won the World Cup, yet in later life they barely spoke. With razor-sharp tactical analysis, Wilson follows their playing and managerial careers, from Bobby's failure at Preston to Jack's success at Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday and with Ireland, and shows how their lives tell the story of late twentieth-century English football and the social history around it.
