Mixing Up the Medicine delves into the intricate and often enigmatic world of the legendary musician Bob Dylan. This book presents an unprecedented glimpse into Dylan’s creative life, drawing on his archive to illuminate the artist's journey through music, writing and art.
As the official publication of The Bob Dylan Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, which now holds some 6,000 original Dylan manuscripts, from draft lyrics and notebooks to other ephemera, alongside photographs, moving images and recordings, the book offers the first wide-angle look at the archive. Edited by Mark Davidson and Parker Fishel, it follows the full span of Dylan's working life and his shifting creative processes, from his earliest home recordings in the mid-1950s through Rough and Rowdy Ways (2020) and into the present day. At its heart is a curated selection of more than 600 images, including draft lyrics, writings, photographs and drawings never circulated before.
This work explores themes of creativity and the interplay between art and life. An introductory essay by Sean Wilentz and an epilogue by Douglas Brinkley frame contributions from a wide range of writers, artists and musicians, among them Joy Harjo, Greil Marcus, Michael Ondaatje, Amanda Petrusich, Lee Ranaldo, Alex Ross, Ed Ruscha, Lucy Sante and Greg Tate. After seeing the collection in Tulsa, each contributor chose a single item that intrigued or inspired them, and their essays, written for this volume, shed new light on Dylan's creative process and on their own.
Combining archival images with essays from many different voices, the book is designed to engage both devoted fans and newcomers, making it a valuable addition to the literature surrounding one of music's most influential figures.
Readers interested in Dylan's songwriting and creative process will find Mixing Up the Medicine a compelling exploration of the artistic spirit.
