The Plague

The Plague by Jacqueline Rose is a profound collection of essays that delves into the complexities of death and dying within contemporary society, particularly in light of the Covid-19 pandemic and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Rose's work invites readers to confront the often-avoided reality of mortality, urging a reconsideration of how we engage with the concept of death in our daily lives.

The Themes

At the heart of the collection lies the theme of 'living death,' a challenging notion that critiques the Western tendency to sidestep discussions about mortality. Rose draws upon the philosophy of Simone Weil, presenting a compelling argument for a world that not only acknowledges death but also advocates for a more equitable distribution of wealth and resources.

The Writing Style

Rose's writing is characterised by its intellectual rigor and emotional depth, blending philosophical reflection with broader societal observations. The essays weave together philosophical musings and cultural critiques, creating a rich tapestry that invites readers to reflect on their own views surrounding life and death.

Ultimately, The Plague is not just an examination of death; it is a call to engage with the realities of our existence and to envision a world that respects both life and death.
