Gwen John

In Gwen John, Alicia Foster delves into the remarkable life and artistry of one of the most significant British artists of the early to mid-twentieth century. This comprehensive biography follows the Welsh-born artist to London and then to Paris, where she remained for the rest of her life, immersing readers in the rich cultural landscapes that shaped her work.

The Plot

Based on original research, the book traces the development of John's work and its significance in the context of twentieth-century art. Foster challenges the stereotype of John as a recluse, locating her firmly in the art worlds of London and Paris, among contemporaries such as Paul Cézanne and Edouard Vuillard. It also explores her personal and artistic relationships, including her friendship with Rainer Maria Rilke and her romance with the sculptor Auguste Rodin.

Themes

Central themes include:

• Her place in the art worlds of London and Paris, where she chose to live and work
• The myth of the solitary recluse, set against her life in two busy art worlds
