On the Apostolic Preaching

In On the Apostolic Preaching, St Irenaeus sets out the foundational teachings of the early Christian Church, illuminating the profound theological insights that shaped its development. This edition, translated from Armenian and published as volume 17 of the Popular Patristics Series, offers a clear and simple introduction to this crucial work.

The Story

Regarded as the most important theologian of the second century, Irenaeus explains here, as in Against the Heresies, that there is one God, made known to humanity by his one Son, Jesus Christ, through the one Holy Spirit, and that this God draws his creatures, made from dust, into intimate communion with himself. Writing among a plethora of religions and gods, in an age not unlike our own, he urges his readers to hold fast to Scripture, which recounts the deeds that bring them into God's covenant. His Christocentric reading of Scripture gave his contemporaries, and gives readers today, a key to its meaning.
