A Chateau Under Siege

A Chateau Under Siege is a gripping mystery novel by Martin Walker, featuring the beloved Chief of Police Bruno Courrèges. Set against the picturesque backdrop of Sarlat, the story unfolds during a historical re-enactment that commemorates the town's liberation from English forces in 1370. The event takes a dark turn when the actor portraying the French general, Kerquelin, suffers a near-fatal injury. The incident raises urgent questions: was it a tragic accident, or a calculated assault?

The Plot

As Bruno investigates, he learns that Kerquelin, recruited from a brilliant career in Silicon Valley, was running Frenchelon, the nearby secret French electronic intelligence base, and that his old Silicon Valley colleagues are staying at the luxurious local chateau of Rouffillac as his guests. Bruno then discovers that Kerquelin's wound was faked and that he is alive and well, secretly negotiating a huge deal to build a semi-conductor industry in France, until a dangerous new player emerges, determined to stop the deal. The narrative masterfully weaves together elements of history, modern espionage, and local culture, creating a rich tapestry that keeps readers on the edge of their seats.
