Silvia Moreno-Garcia Collection

Delve into the rich tapestry of storytelling woven by Silvia Moreno-Garcia in her collection, which includes the acclaimed titles 'Gods of Jade and Shadow,' 'The Beautiful Ones,' and 'Mexican Gothic.' Each narrative transports readers to distinct realms, exploring themes of identity, culture, and the supernatural.

The Plot

'Gods of Jade and Shadow' is a captivating tale that blends Mayan mythology with a coming-of-age story. It follows Casiopea Tun, a young woman from a small town in southern Mexico who accidentally frees an ancient Mayan god of death and agrees to help him win back his throne from his treacherous brother, a quest that takes her all the way to Xibalba, the Mayan underworld. Meanwhile, 'The Beautiful Ones' is a sweeping romance of love and betrayal, with more than a dash of magic. Lastly, 'Mexican Gothic' plunges into the eerie atmosphere of High Place, a remote house in the Mexican countryside, where socialite Noemí Taboada answers a frantic plea from her newlywed cousin and uncovers the family's dark secrets.

Themes

• Identity and Heritage: Two of the novels are set in Mexico, drawing on its landscapes and, in Gods of Jade and Shadow, on Mayan mythology.
• Supernatural Elements: Moreno-Garcia masterfully integrates folklore and myth, adding depth and intrigue to her narratives.
• Empowerment and Resistance: Heroines such as Casiopea and Noemí show strength and determination, whether dreaming of a life of their own or refusing to be cowed by a menacing household.

Writing Style

Moreno-Garcia's writing is both lyrical and evocative, drawing readers into her vividly realised worlds. Her prose balances elegance with a sense of urgency, making for a compelling reading experience. The atmospheric settings and richly developed characters resonate long after the final page is turned.

“You don’t read this book so much as surrender to it. A dark and heady swoon” – The Guardian, on Mexican Gothic
