Hitler, Stalin, Mum and Dad

Hitler, Stalin, Mum and Dad is a poignant memoir by Daniel Finkelstein that delves into the harrowing experiences of his parents during the tumultuous years of the Second World War. Through the stories of his mother, Mirjam Wiener, and his father, Ludwik, the narrative unfolds against the backdrop of persecution under Hitler and Stalin, illuminating the resilience and courage of two ordinary families.

The Plot

The memoir intricately weaves together the personal and the historical, chronicling the journey of the Wiener family as they navigate the treacherous landscape of war. Mirjam's father, Alfred, a decorated hero of the Great War, recognised the looming threat of Hitler early on, meticulously documenting the rising tide of Nazi atrocities. After moving the family to Amsterdam, he took his library to London, but Germany invaded the Netherlands before his wife and children could follow, and they were rounded up and sent to Bergen-Belsen. Meanwhile, after Hitler and Stalin divided Poland, Ludwik's father was sentenced to hard labour in the Gulag, and Ludwik was deported to Siberia to work as a slave labourer on a collective farm.

Finkelstein explores profound themes of family, resilience, and the enduring human spirit in the face of adversity. The narrative is not just a recounting of survival; it reflects on the deep bonds that hold families together, even when the world around them falls apart.
