Description
In Sisters under the Rising Sun, Heather Morris masterfully weaves a tale of resilience and camaraderie set against the backdrop of World War II. As Singapore succumbs to the advancing Japanese Army in 1942, musician Norah Chambers makes the heart-wrenching decision to send her daughter Sally away for her safety. Meanwhile, Australian nurse Nesta James finds herself among the desperate evacuees boarding the HMS Vyner Brooke. Tragically, the vessel is bombed and sinks, casting Norah and Nesta into a harrowing struggle for survival.
The Plot
Washing ashore in Indonesia, the two women are captured and taken to a brutal Japanese POW camp, where they endure starvation, brutality, and despair. Yet, amidst the horrors of their captivity, they discover an unexpected source of strength: music. Norah's leadership in forming a 'voice orchestra' becomes a beacon of hope, fostering connection and resilience among the women imprisoned with them.
Themes
The novel explores profound themes of friendship, survival, and the healing power of music. Morris’s poignant prose captures the emotional depth of the characters' experiences, making their struggles and triumphs resonate deeply with readers.
