Humankind & Utopia for Realists Collection

In the Humankind & Utopia for Realists Collection, Rutger Bregman invites readers to reassess the narrative of humanity through a lens of optimism and possibility. This thought-provoking non-fiction collection pairs two of Bregman’s books, Humankind and Utopia for Realists, the latter challenging prevailing notions about the structures that govern our societies.

The Plot

In Utopia for Realists, Bregman argues that a society built on visionary ideas is not only achievable but wholly implementable, noting that milestones of civilisation such as the end of slavery and the birth of democracy were once dismissed as utopian fantasies. He draws on a rich tapestry of historical examples, from a Canadian city that once wiped out poverty to Richard Nixon's near introduction of a basic income, illustrating how ideas such as universal basic income or a fifteen-hour working week could become reality in our lifetime.

Themes

• Ideas Whose Time Has Come: Bold proposals such as universal basic income and a fifteen-hour working week.
• Societal Structures: Examination of how existing systems can be reshaped for the betterment of all.
• Realism and Utopia: The interplay of idealistic visions with practical solutions.

Writing Style

Bregman's writing is both accessible and engaging, taking readers on a journey through history beyond the traditional left-right divide. His ability to distil complex ideas into relatable concepts makes this collection a stimulating read for anyone interested in sociology, politics, and human behaviour.
