Notes from the Henhouse

Notes from the Henhouse is a delightful exploration of rural life, weaving together strands of humour and gothic elements that captivate the reader’s imagination. In this collection of autobiographical essays, set in places from a Gothic castle to a draughty Norfolk farmhouse, Barker introduces a cast of vibrant characters, including her beloved husband, the poet George Barker, with his cowboy songs and recitations of poetry, and Portia, a pet pig with a penchant for drama.

The Plot

Barker writes of family life with five entrancing babies who grow up at breakneck speed, and of the thrill of writing, the dither of procrastination and the adventures to be had in the imagination. She also writes of the outrage of death and the loneliness of widowhood, and then of the surprising joys of moving slowly round the garden in a shapeless coat, planting narcissus bulbs. The result is a rich tapestry of experiences that highlight the beauty and chaos of family life.

Writing Style

Elspeth Barker's prose flows with a lyrical quality, bringing to life the sights and sounds of rural England. Her ability to blend humour with poignant moments adds a unique flavour to the narrative, inviting readers to reflect on their own lives. The vivid descriptions and engaging storytelling create a world that feels both familiar and enchanting.
