The Pharmacist

The Pharmacist is a compelling debut novel set in a bunker where the very few people who made it now wait for the outside world to heal. Wolfe, one of the lucky ones, is employed as the bunker's pharmacist, handing out medicine under the watchful eye of an increasingly erratic and paranoid leader.

The Plot

When the leader begins to ask Wolfe for favours she can hardly refuse, her luck seems to be running out. Forming an unlikely alliance with the young Doctor Stirling, her troubled assistant Levitt and Canavan, a tattooed giant whose purpose in the bunker is a mystery, she must navigate the powder keg of life underground, where a single misstep could light the fuse. The walls that keep her safe also keep her trapped, and the tension builds around one question: how much more is Wolfe willing to give to stay alive?

Themes

• Power: The novel intricately examines how authority can corrupt and the lengths to which people will go to maintain control.
• Confinement: It captures the strain of life underground, where safety and imprisonment go hand in hand.
• Survival: The question of what a person will give up to stay alive serves as a central theme.

With its rich prose and thought-provoking content, The Pharmacist will resonate with readers who appreciate works that explore the complexities of human relationships and societal structures. Fans of dystopian and speculative fiction will find much to ponder within these pages.
