The Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatius Sancho

The Secret Diaries of Charles Ignatius Sancho is a compelling historical novel that delves into the life of one of the 18th century's most intriguing figures. Through the lens of Sancho's secret diaries, author Paterson Joseph crafts a rich narrative that reveals the complexities of identity, race, and resilience.

The Plot

The story unfolds in a time when Sancho, born on a slave ship on which both his parents died, defies societal expectations: he meets the King, writes and plays music, becomes the first Black person to vote in Britain and helps lead the fight to end slavery. Joseph masterfully weaves together the historical context with Sancho's personal struggles, highlighting his determination to carve out a place for himself in a world rife with prejudice.

It is 1746, and Georgian London is a dangerous place for a young Black man who has escaped slavery. Sancho must dodge slave catchers once night falls, and the kindly duke who taught him to write, the man he hoped would help him, is dying. His story begins on a stormy Atlantic and ends at the very heart of London life, a journey fraught with both triumphs and tribulations.
