Pihkal

Pihkal is a profound exploration of the intricate relationship between chemistry, consciousness, and culture, authored by the esteemed Alexander T. Shulgin and Ann Shulgin. This seminal work delves into the world of psychedelic phenethylamines, intertwining scientific analysis with personal narrative.

The Plot

The book is divided into two compelling halves. The first half unfolds as a fictionalised love story that follows two characters navigating their relationship amid their journeys with various psychoactive substances. Their experiences serve as a lens through which readers can examine the broader implications of these compounds on human emotion and understanding of life and death.

In the second half, Shulgin transitions into a comprehensive examination of the chemistry behind these entheogens. He meticulously details the synthesis of 179 phenethylamines, most discovered by Shulgin himself, with suggested dosages, durations and detailed commentary on their effects.
