Description
The Dream Team: Jaz Santos vs. the World is an inspiring tale that follows the journey of Jasmina Santos-Campbell, affectionately known as Jaz. With a burning desire to elevate her football team, the Bramrock Stars, to fame, Jaz embarks on a quest not only to prove her skills to her mother but also to forge a united team from a diverse group of seven girls.
The Plot
As Jaz gathers her teammates, each girl brings her own unique background and experiences to the pitch. The story delves into the challenges they face in their quest to be taken seriously in a sport often dominated by stereotypes. Through rigorous training sessions and competitive matches, the girls learn valuable lessons about friendship, teamwork, and the importance of believing in oneself.
Themes
This engaging narrative explores themes of family, inclusivity, and the empowerment of young girls in sports. It highlights the significance of support systems, both within the family and amongst friends, as they navigate their ambitions and confront societal expectations.
Literary Merit
Priscilla Mante skillfully blends humour and heart in her writing, creating relatable characters that resonate with readers of all ages. The Dream Team is a celebration of girl power, making it a compelling read for those who enjoyed books like The Crossover by Kwame Alexander or Roller Girl by Victoria Jamieson.
