Gnostic Religion in Antiquity

Delve into the intriguing world of Gnosticism with Gnostic Religion in Antiquity by Roelof van den Broek. This compelling work explores the multifaceted aspects of Gnostic thought and its interplay with early Christianity, offering readers a profound understanding of ancient religious practices and beliefs.

The Story

Gnostic religion centres on Gnosis, an esoteric knowledge of God and of the human being that brings salvation to those who possess it. Van den Broek offers a fresh approach to the gnostic current of Late Antiquity, placing it in its historical and religious context. Drawing on sources in Greek, Latin and Coptic, and discussing individual works of surviving gnostic literature, he explores the various gnostic interpretations of the Christian faith current in the second and third centuries. The narrative weaves together historical context and theological insight, showing that, despite its influence on early Christianity, gnostic religion was not a typically Christian phenomenon.
