Midwinter Burning

Midwinter Burning is a poignant tale that delves into themes of belonging, identity, and the complexities of friendship set against the backdrop of World War II. The story follows Alfie Wright, a young boy who feels like an outsider, particularly in the eyes of his mother, who seems embarrassed of him. Evacuated to the serene countryside of Devon, Alfie's life begins to change as he finds a home with kind old Aunt Bell and her gentle giant of a son.

The Plot

Among the cows, pigs and geese of the farm, Alfie is happier than he has ever been, especially once he makes friends with a local boy, Snidge. But Snidge is not all he appears, and the mystery around him seems to be linked to the Midwinter Burning, an annual ritual held at the Standing Stones high on the cliffs. Aunt Bell calls it harmless superstition, but when Snidge goes missing, Alfie finally discovers who his friend really is, and relives the true horror of the legend.
