Nuclear Folly

Nuclear Folly delves into the harrowing events of the Cuban Missile Crisis, a defining moment in Cold War history when the spectre of nuclear conflict loomed over the globe. The narrative unfolds over more than four weeks in the autumn of 1962, capturing the high-stakes decision-making processes of pivotal figures such as John F. Kennedy, Nikita Khrushchev, and Fidel Castro.

The Plot

Drawing on a wide range of primary sources, among them recently declassified KGB files, Serhii Plokhy presents a gripping account of diplomacy under pressure. The book reveals the intricate web of deception and mutual suspicion that characterised the interactions between the United States and the Soviet Union. It shows how the Americans and Soviets repeatedly misread each other, amid mutual distrust, second-guessing and false information, and how nuclear disaster was in the end avoided for one very human reason: fear.
