The Maiden

Set against the tumultuous backdrop of 1679 Edinburgh, The Maiden by Kate Foster delves into the harrowing tale of Lady Christian, a woman whose life unravels after being accused of murdering her lover, James Forrester. What unfolds is not merely a trial, but a sensational spectacle that captivates and horrifies the public, with the media quick to label her both an adulteress and a murderess.

The Plot

Once a figure of respect and privilege, Christian's affair leads her down a path of chaos as she grapples with societal expectations and the brutal realities of the legal system. Through her eyes, readers witness the intense scrutiny and judgement faced by women who defy the norms of their time. As her story unfolds, the narrative raises profound questions about guilt, morality, and the price of personal freedom.
