Description
“Vermeer - The Rijksmuseum's major exhibition catalogue” offers a profound exploration of the life and artistry of Johannes Vermeer, one of the most celebrated painters of the Dutch Golden Age. This comprehensive catalogue accompanies a significant exhibition at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, presenting a unique opportunity to delve into Vermeer's world, shedding light on all thirty-seven of his paintings.
The Themes
The book considers the hushed, enigmatic quality of paintings that draw the viewer into a private world, asking who sat for them, whether the subjects were real or imagined, and how Vermeer achieved his unrivalled sense of intimacy. Bringing together strands of his professional and private life, it allows readers to appreciate the subtleties Vermeer brought to his art.
The Artistry
Printed on matte paper chosen to ensure the veracity of colours, the reproductions invite readers to engage closely with Vermeer’s paintings, fostering a deeper understanding of the overall impact of his work.
Additional Insights
- Contextual illustrations, commentaries and up-to-date research by Vermeer scholars from the Rijksmuseum, the National Gallery, the Mauritshuis and other leading museums
- A design by Irma Boom, printed on specially commissioned uncoated paper to ensure the veracity of colours
For those interested in art history, this catalogue stands as a significant contribution to the understanding of Vermeer's legacy and the broader narrative of 17th-century Dutch painting.
