On the Move: Poems About Migration

On the Move: Poems About Migration is a poignant collection by Michael Rosen, illustrated by Sir Quentin Blake, that delves into the profound themes of migration and displacement. Structured into four distinct sections, the collection weaves a tapestry of personal and collective experiences that resonate deeply with the complexities of identity and belonging.

The Plot

The journey begins with reflections on Rosen's childhood as part of a first-generation Polish family living in London. Through vivid imagery and heartfelt language, he captures memories of growing up in a family shaped by migration. The second section turns to his perception of the War as a young boy.

In the third section, Rosen confronts the harrowing impact of the Holocaust, exploring themes of loss and the haunting absence of loved ones. Each poem serves as a testament to the resilience of memory and the enduring search for connection. The final section broadens the lens to encompass global migration experiences, reflecting on the shared struggles and aspirations of those who seek a place to call home.

Rosen's writing style is characterised by its lyrical quality and emotional depth. His use of imagery and metaphor invites readers to reflect on their own experiences of belonging and displacement.
