Description
Oscar by Matthew Sturgis is a compelling biography that delves into the life of one of literature's most enigmatic figures, Oscar Wilde. Set against the vibrant backdrop of late 19th-century Europe, the book intricately weaves together Wilde's personal and professional journeys, exploring his profound impact on literature and society.
The Story
Sturgis paints a vivid portrait of Wilde's life, from his early years in Dublin to his rise as a celebrated playwright and poet in London and Paris. The narrative unpacks the complexities of Wilde's identity as a gay man during an era of strict moral codes, illuminating the struggles he faced and the friendships he forged with notable figures of the time. Through a meticulous examination of his works, including The Picture of Dorian Gray and The Importance of Being Earnest, the biography showcases Wilde's wit, charm, and tragic downfall.
