The Oresteia

The Oresteia is a monumental trilogy of Greek tragedies penned by the esteemed playwright Aeschylus, and it remains a cornerstone of Western literature. This compelling work explores themes of justice, revenge, and the evolution of societal order in the wake of personal and familial tragedy.

The Story

Comprising three plays—The Agamemnon, The Libation Bearers, and The Eumenides—the narrative unfolds the harrowing tale of King Agamemnon's decision to sacrifice his daughter to turn the tide of war, his murder by his wife Clytemnestra, and the subsequent quest for vengeance by their son Orestes, who is then tormented by supernatural powers. The trilogy delves deeply into the cycle of violence that ensues, culminating in a profound exploration of the transition from archaic retribution to the establishment of legal justice.
