The Killing Place

The Killing Place by Kate Ellis is a gripping addition to the Wesley Peterson series, masterfully blending elements of mystery and history. Set against the backdrop of the picturesque South Devon, the narrative unfolds during the quiet month of November, only to be shattered by a shocking murder on Bonfire Night.

The Plot

Detective Inspector Wesley Peterson finds himself entangled in a complex investigation when Patrick North is discovered dead near the enigmatic Nesbaraton Hall. This historic estate holds secrets of its own, and as Wesley delves deeper, he stumbles upon a menacing letter linked to the Smithson family, the estate's owners who are currently away. Meanwhile, archaeologist Dr Neil Watson is unearthing his own mysteries as he discovers a hidden grotto on land once part of Nesbaraton, intertwining the threads of past and present.

Ellis's writing style is both vivid and immersive, drawing readers into the rich tapestry of South Devon's landscape and history. The novel explores themes of heritage, family secrets, and the impact of the past on the present, making it a thought-provoking read. As with other books in the series, the intricate plot twists and well-developed characters keep readers engaged until the very last page.
