Fair Rosaline: The most captivating, powerful and subversive retelling you'll read this year

In Fair Rosaline, Natasha Solomons presents a fresh perspective on the timeless tale of Romeo and Juliet, inviting readers to delve into the heart and mind of Rosaline, the young woman Romeo first falls for. This retelling not only reimagines the narrative but also challenges the conventions of love and loyalty that have long defined Shakespeare's classic.

The Plot

Rosaline, often relegated to the shadows of her more famous counterparts, emerges as a headstrong and fiercely independent character. When Romeo Montague falls instantly in love with her, this charming stranger seems to offer an escape from the convent her father is determined she will enter. But Rosaline soon starts to doubt everything Romeo has told her and ends the match, only to see his gaze turn to her thirteen-year-old cousin, Juliet. As she comes to realise that Juliet's life, and not only her reputation, is at stake, and with only hours left before she is banished behind the nunnery walls, Rosaline must decide whether she can save her cousin. Told in a fierce, forgotten voice, hers is a tale of resilience and the struggle for agency in a world dominated by male narratives.

Themes

• Empowerment: Rosaline's character challenges traditional gender roles, showcasing the strength found in defiance and self-assertion.
• Love and Doubt: The novel intricately weaves romantic idealism with Rosaline's growing doubts about the man who has courted her.
• Identity: As Rosaline grapples with her sense of self amidst the chaos of familial loyalty and societal expectations, the reader is invited to reflect on their own identities.

With its lyrical prose and rich character development, Fair Rosaline takes everything you thought you knew about Romeo and Juliet and turns it on its head. This novel is a testament to the enduring power of storytelling and the myriad ways in which a single tale can be told.
