The Plot

In this collection, Ballard, a tenacious detective on the LAPD's notorious graveyard shift, navigates the gritty underbelly of Los Angeles. The set includes The Late Show, Dark Sacred Night and The Night Fire. In Dark Sacred Night she meets Harry Bosch, an ex-homicide detective consumed by the unsolved murder of Daisy Clayton, and in The Night Fire Ballard, Bosch and the Lincoln Lawyer, Mickey Haller, are drawn into the murder of a judge, the death of a homeless person burned alive and an old case file left to Bosch by his late mentor. As she delves deeper into the cases, themes of justice, morality, and redemption emerge, painting a vivid picture of the city’s shadows.

Key Themes

• Resilience: Ballard's perseverance in the face of adversity highlights the human spirit's capacity to endure.
• Justice vs. Morality: The stories explore the grey areas of law enforcement, questioning what it means to seek justice.
• Isolation: Set against the backdrop of night, the collection delves into the solitude of those who work after dark.

Writing Style

Michael Connelly employs a sharp, engaging prose style that immerses readers in the atmospheric tension of each story. The vivid descriptions of Los Angeles at night serve as a character in itself, enhancing the narrative’s intensity. Readers familiar with similar works, such as those by Robert Crais, will find a rich tapestry of suspense and intrigue within these pages.
