Description
The Upside of Falling by Alex Light is a contemporary tale that explores the complexities of love and self-discovery through the eyes of seventeen-year-old Becca Hart. Disillusioned with the concept of true love, Becca is driven to concoct a lie about being in a secret relationship, primarily to evade the mockery of her former best friend.
The Plot
When popular football captain Brett Wells inadvertently overhears Becca's fabricated story, he unexpectedly agrees to step in as her pretend boyfriend. As they navigate the intricate web of their charade, both Becca and Brett encounter a series of challenges that test their acting skills and emotional resilience. The line between pretence and reality begins to blur, leading them to confront their own feelings and assumptions about love.
Themes
- Self-Discovery: The narrative delves into the journey of finding oneself amidst societal pressures.
- Friendship and Loyalty: The evolving dynamics of friendships play a crucial role in shaping the characters' decisions.
- The Nature of Love: The story questions conventional notions of romance and authenticity.
