Top Girls

Top Girls is a groundbreaking play by Caryl Churchill that delves into the complexities of feminism, power, and the sacrifices women make in the pursuit of success. Set in the 1980s, the narrative intertwines the lives of historical and fictional women, exploring their struggles and triumphs in a male-dominated society.

The Story

The play opens with Marlene, a career-driven woman who has just been promoted to the head of the Top Girls Employment Agency. In a surreal dinner party, she hosts a gathering of remarkable women from history, including Pope Joan and Lady Nijo, each sharing their unique experiences of womanhood and ambition. As the evening continues, the stories of her five guests unfold alongside Marlene's own choices and the crisis building in her life. Through a series of poignant scenes, Churchill examines the notion of success and the cost it exacts on personal lives.
