Yerma

Yerma, penned by the renowned Spanish playwright Federico Garcia Lorca, delves into the profound themes of desire, societal expectations, and the struggles faced by women in a patriarchal society. Set in a rural, traditional society, this poignant play explores the emotional turmoil of Yerma, a woman consumed by her yearning for motherhood.

The Story

Yerma, whose name means barren, is one of the three tragic plays about peasants and rural life that make up Lorca’s rural trilogy, and possibly his harshest. It follows a woman’s immense struggle against infertility: as her desperation mounts, she becomes consumed by the longing for a child, and her barrenness becomes a metaphor for a marriage in a traditional society that denies women sexual or social equality. Lorca masterfully encapsulates the clash between personal desires and societal norms, as her desperate yearning finally drives her to commit a terrible crime.
