The Dictionary People

The Dictionary People by Sarah Ogilvie delves into the fascinating tapestry of contributors to the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), challenging the traditional narrative that attributes its creation solely to a select group of elite scholars. Through meticulous research and vivid storytelling, Ogilvie uncovers the myriad voices that shaped this monumental work.

The Plot

In this compelling exploration, Ogilvie reveals the contributions of individuals from diverse backgrounds, from astronomers, naturists and suffragists to Karl Marx's daughter, a vegetarian vicar and even murderers. Each of these unique stories illustrates how the OED is not merely a product of academic scholarship, but rather a reflection of the rich and varied human experience. By digging into previously untapped archives, the author brings to life the unsung heroes who played pivotal roles in compiling the dictionary's extensive entries.
