Description
Cuckoo Summer is a poignant tale set against the backdrop of the Lake District in the summer of 1940. The story follows local boy Tommy as he crosses paths with Sally, an evacuee living on a nearby farm. Their seemingly innocent summer takes a perilous turn when they stumble upon a wounded Nazi airman hidden in the woods.
The Plot
Sally persuades Tommy to hide the airman rather than report him to the authorities. This decision catapults them into a world rife with moral complexities and secrets surrounding Sally’s past. As they grapple with their choices, Tommy and Sally must confront questions of loyalty, bravery, and the cost of keeping a secret.
Themes
- Friendship: The friendship between Tommy and Sally is at the heart of the story as they navigate the consequences of their actions.
- Moral Dilemmas: The story raises questions about right and wrong in extraordinary circumstances.
- The Impact of War: Set during a tumultuous time, the narrative explores how war affects individuals and relationships.
Jonathan Tulloch has crafted a narrative that resonates with readers who appreciate historical fiction infused with emotional depth. Cuckoo Summer may also appeal to readers who enjoy stories in which the innocence of youth meets the harsh realities of war.
