Description
In In the Shadow of the Rising Sun: Surviving a Prisoner of War Childhood, Olga Henderson presents a poignant narrative of resilience and courage amid the harrowing backdrop of war. In February 1942, aged 10, she was living in Singapore when the city fell to the Japanese Imperial Army, and her childhood was irrevocably altered when she was sent to the notorious Changi Prison. Through her eyes, readers witness the daily struggles and heartbreaking realities faced by those deprived of freedom.
The Plot
This memoir intricately weaves personal experience with historical events, painting a vivid picture of life as a prisoner of war. As the young Olga endures unimaginable cruelty, fear and uncertainty, themes of hope and the quest for survival emerge, revealing not only the physical challenges of captivity but also its emotional toll. Now in her 90s and living a quiet life in Eastbourne, she tells how she survived against all the odds.
