Rivers of London Series 3 Books Collection

Ben Aaronovitch's Rivers of London series invites readers into a captivating blend of urban fantasy and police procedural. This collection brings together three titles from the series: the novel Amongst Our Weapons, the novella Winter's Gifts and The Masquerades of Spring.

The Books

In Amongst Our Weapons, someone is murdered in the heavily guarded London Silver Vaults and the killer vanishes without trace. Witnesses report a blinding flash and lost memories, so the case goes to Detective Constable Peter Grant and the Special Assessment Unit, alongside DCI Thomas Nightingale, while Peter's partner Beverley is due to give birth to twins.

Winter's Gifts crosses the Atlantic: FBI Special Agent Kimberley Reynolds heads to snowbound Northern Wisconsin after a retired agent reports a strange incident and then disappears, and the trail leads back to a cursed expedition into the frozen wilderness.

The Masquerades of Spring is narrated by Augustus Berrycloth-Young, known as Gussie, an Englishman abroad in Jazz Age New York, whose old friend Thomas Nightingale arrives on the trail of a saxophone said to hold a strange power over anyone who plays it, a case that leads from Long Island to the jazz clubs of Harlem.

Themes

• Urban Fantasy: The series interlaces the mundane with the magical.
• Mystery: Each story is built around a puzzling case with a supernatural edge.

Writing Style

Aaronovitch's prose is characterised by wit and humour, providing a fresh take on traditional fantasy tropes.
