Description

The Phil Earle Collection is a compelling set of three Second World War stories, each built around the bond between a child and an animal. Each book presents a unique facet of life in wartime, highlighting the resilience of the human spirit amid the chaos of conflict.

The Plot

In When the Sky Falls, Joseph is sent in 1941 to live in the city with gruff Mrs F, whose only loves are her rundown zoo and its silverback gorilla, Adonis. While the Storm Rages follows Noah, who promises his dad he will keep their family dog safe and goes on the run with his two best friends when the government advises people to have their pets put down. In Until the Road Ends, evacuee Peggy is separated from her dog Beau, who becomes an unlikely war hero searching the bombed streets for survivors. The stories intricately weave together themes of bravery, friendship, and the struggle for survival, as their young heroes grapple with loss, hope, and the bonds that form in the most challenging of times.

Themes

  • Resilience: The collection powerfully illustrates how individuals can endure and thrive, even in the darkest situations.
  • Friendship: The friendships at the heart of each story highlight the importance of camaraderie and support in overcoming adversity.
  • The Impact of War: Through the eyes of their young heroes, the books convey the profound effects of war on families and communities.

Writing Style

Phil Earle's writing is both evocative and accessible, making the stories engaging for readers aged 9-13. His ability to depict intense emotions and vivid settings ensures that young readers are not only entertained but also encouraged to reflect on the historical context of the narratives.

Fans of historical fiction and animal stories will find much to appreciate in this collection.
